All civilised cities have a sewerage system, but the best ones are the ones you can’t see.
In Sydney’s case, the only visible evidence of its original system are 19 pumping stations, all built around the time of Australia’s Federation.
The first and most important of these stations is located in Pyrmont, and is HAA’s most recently commenced project. The No. 1 Pumping Station gave a face to Sydney’ s first sewerage system, which covered the whole area south of the harbour and elevated the city to a much higher standard of sanitation. The building to receive conservation is a beautiful architectural wrapping of an otherwise invisible feat of engineering.
