North Alexandria Heritage Assessment
Historically an industrialised area dating from the 20th century, North Alexandria contains a number of heritage items and Heritage Conservation Areas (HCAs) relating to this period. The North Alexandria Industrial HCA is the largest known group of interwar industrial buildings in Australia
At the request of the City of Sydney Council, HAA assessed the impact of proposed changes to height, floor space ratio, change of use and public domains against each item and HCA within or adjacent to North Alexandria, to determine if the proposed changes would have a positive or neutral impact. HAA also made a number of recommendations to further the City’s objectives regarding conserving the area’s fine grain character and developing a thriving employment precinct for which the heritage streetscape is a key attraction.
Overall HAA found that the proposed transition from light industry to a cultural and entertainment precinct will create interesting and engaging spaces that will encourage greater public engagement with the area’s industrial heritage.
