St John’s College

  • Ongoing relationships over many years with a client are unusual for architects. The work HAA has undertaken at St John’s College began with a masterplan. A suite of works recommended in that masterplan was then undertaken. A second masterplan has continued to develop the College’s vision to improve the amenity of its residential students.

The resultant works are diverse: the Nagle Library, a modern study centre; accessible stairs; common rooms; improved security; meeting spaces and dining areas located outside; long term planning for the fabric maintenance, including a roof program. Many of the new spaces have been created within existing college buildings and grounds. This was achieved through a careful analysis of the college’s rooms and how they could be better utilised, rather than undertaking major new construction projects. HAA has also given development advice and undertaken feasibility studies.

HAA’s collaborative approach to interact not only with the College administration but also seek input from current students has underpinned the success of these various changes.

  • St John’s is one of a group of colleges affiliated with The University of Sydney for whom HAA continues to provide strategic and building advice. Some of these relationships date back more than 30 years.
