Kwong War Chong building

HAA undertook an assessment of 82-84 Dixon Street, Haymarket on behalf of The City of Sydney Council to determine if the building was worthy of heritage listing.

The contextual history of the Kwong War Chong building became the main focus of the assessment, in view of its significant role in the history of migration between China and Australia. This building was a key part of an extensive network of business, industrial and social relations among Chinese Australians. This significance is embodied in the building’s façade, the interiors, and the wide range of historic ephemera contained within the building.

The assessment was built on advocacy and historical research from the Chinese community in Sydney. In view of the continual historical and social significance of The Kwong War Chong Building, HAA’s recommendations that the building be listed on the NSW State Heritage Register as well as in the City of Sydney LEP have been successful.
