Cumberland Place and Steps

The impetus to update the Conservation Management Plan for Cumberland Place and Steps, was to have it fit within the current framework of the Rocks Heritage Management Plan. Cumberland Place and Steps is state heritage listed, significant for its historic use as an early pedestrian thoroughfare.

It is notable for its informal aesthetic and continued social use as a gathering place, as well as its potential to reveal information about early colonial and perhaps ancient street formations; and its rarity and representativeness as an early urban solution to the steep topography of The Rocks.

Undertaken on behalf of Place Management NSW, the CMP covers an extensive history of the place and its significance, providing conservation policies and an implementation plan for its maintenance.
